Tammy Greer, Ph.D., is a citizen of the United Houma Nation, associate professor in the School of Psychology where she engages in health disparities research and director of the Southern Miss Center for American Indian Research and Studies (CAIRS). She and the Golden Eagles Intertribal Society, a Native-focused student organization, host a yearly powwow, a school day, and wild tend a 1,000 square foot native plant Medicine Wheel Garden on the campus of Southern Miss. Dr. Greer and other Houma tribal members recently received a Library of Congress Grant to elevate Houma culture bearers so that their voices and work will be available to the 7th generation of Houma youth. Currently, she and a collective of tribal folks who received funding from Prospect New Orleans are building and tending a mound on the Lafitte Greenway in New Orleans, LA, as part of their work to wake up our Southeastern cultural traditions.
